Nine

After almost losing her life at eighteen, Amber had promised herself she was going to live in the moment. And it was something that she’d always strived to do. On the back of a horse it was easy—there was no time to worry about if she was behaving the right way or if someone could see her imperfections. She just hadn’t always felt comfortable in her own skin. But tonight she did. In town running errands it was a struggle, which was why she usually had to brace herself before she left her truck and walked among everyone else.

It was easier in Royal because no one knew her history the way folks back in Tyler did. But tonight was one of the few times where she felt totally present and like nothing else mattered.

She faltered a little when she saw the dishes he’d had made for them. Some of them looked so fancy she was tempted just to stare at them instead of eat them. But Will put her at ease. He was snapping photos and then telling her that he was posting the photos of them online. She figured it was something like the photo story app that Cara had shown her but she wasn’t interested.

She didn’t want to connect with a world that was bigger than the ranch or Royal and maybe a few folks back in Tyler. That was good enough for her.

Will looked like she imagined a prince would look. He was polished and he talked easily and kept the conversation moving along from topic to topic. He knew horses and led her onto the topic of polo ponies and where she saw the breeding changes leading that field. And it didn’t matter that she was dressed like a woman and not a cowgirl—she felt at ease talking about the animals.

“I did read an article last month that talked about a breeding program that a Saudi prince was spearheading. I think it’s interesting in that he is working on increasing agility while maintaining stamina.”

“That makes sense. I knew a guy in college who had gone to Europe to learn a centuries-old custom of Spanish horse dancing. It is basically training the horse to do very practiced moves, not unlike the Olympic horse events but even more controlled. He used some of those practices when we were playing polo and they worked,” Will said.

“There really is room for crossover in all types of training. I was recently trying a technique with Montgomery that I saw used in the Olympics. Barrel racing is speed and mastery not only over the horse, but also over yourself.”

“How often do you practice?” he asked.

“I try to get a couple of hours in every day. I am only really participating now when I can get away from the ranch,” she said.

“And I couldn’t tell the pattern you were using, but is there one? Or do you just have to circle all of the barrels in the least amount of time.”

She took a bite of her dinner.
